After wild bees, hoverflies are the second-most important pollinators in the world. Although they may look like bees or wasps, there are plenty of ways in which they differ.
They are a true fly, having only 2 wings, unlike Hymenoptera which have 4. Hoverfly larvae feed on the likes of decaying animal matter, thrips and aphids which cause millions of pounds worth of crop damage every year, so hoverfly larvae are essential in protecting agriculture.
Masters of mimicry, these insects use their appearance to protect themselves from predators. Unlike bees and wasps, the hoverfly does not have a stinger, so it uses its colors as it's only defense.
Hoverfly is therefore symbolic of the lightworker, the helper whose job is essential but often behind the scenes. You perform tasks that many may not notice, and credit is often given to another. But without you, everything falls apart. You are someone who not only performs important tasks on the main stage, so to speak, but also help keep things orderly and tidy. You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get dirty if the task requires it. However, you truly shine when you help to make the world a beautiful place. Without you the foundation would crumble.
