Blue Banded Bees are solitary bees. This means that each female bee mates and then builds a solitary nest by herself, inhabiting burrows in the soft sandstone or clay of their native Australian landscape, or in the mortar of homes.
Unlike their social sisters the honeybee, the blue banded bee does not make honey, but rather uses its unique techniques of buzz pollination to access flowers whose pollen is contained in capsules that must be vibrated to be released. This bee has a very unique and critical job.
The Blue banded bee reminds us to honor our solitude, and to know the work you're doing, even in isolation, is necessary and important. She shows us how to navigate the delicate balance of action and rest, knowing when to return home to recharge after a long day of work.
The blue aspect of this bee, as well as it's fondness for blue flowers speaks to the energy of the vishuddha chakra and self expression. The way you move and vibrate throughout your life has immense influence on those you encounter. Do not underestimate your own positive impact on the world.
